In order to better support our students moving from the primary phases into secondary, we have introduced a very successful vertical tutoring model in Year 7 and Year 8. This is in addition to the vertical tutoring that we have in Year 12 and 13 as well. Vertical tutoring means that our students in Year 7 and 8 are grouped together in mixed from groups with an experienced form tutor. Year 7 students are given a support network in their classes with their Year 8 counterparts acting as role models and friends to students who are new to secondary school. In Post 16, students in Year 12 and 13 are given opportunities for leadership and mentoring to younger students. As they move through the vertical tutoring model from Year 7 to 8 and also 12 to 13, confidence builds and leadership skills are fully developed.
Some of the benefits of vertical tutoring are:
- Developing leadership and teamwork;
- Improved behaviour;
- Improved attendance;
- Vertical tutoring creates a more relaxed family atmosphere in school;
- Allows for richer extra-curricular activities and non-academic related activities;
- Allows from tutors to give much more personalised support to their tutees.
